Comperj plans to build a large-scale chemical conglomerate project in Rio de Janeiro in 2012. The consortium will extract heavy oil from Camps Bay and process it into various petrochemical products.
By that time, the company will be able to produce 1.3 million tons of ethylene, 900,000 tons of propylene and 1.3 million tons of aromatics annually. For downstream products of these basic chemicals, private partners will build polyethylene, polypropylene, styrene, ethylene glycol and other derivative devices to support production. It is estimated that the joint venture will have a total investment of approximately US$8.3 billion and will be the largest project in Brazil’s petrochemical industry.
Brazil encouraged the development of the private chemicals sector and received good results.
