The German laboratory Fraunhofer ISC has developed a flexible mechanical sensor that can be sewn into woven and knitted fabrics. The sensor can accurately measure the degree of deformation and pressure, and can withstand double the tensile length. The elastomeric film has flexible electrodes on both sides and electrode patterns can be used to form the sensor array. Silicone rubber is the preferred elastomer material, with chemical crosslinking to adjust the hardness. "The textile integrated sensor is not only washable but also highly comfortable and reasonably priced," the lab said. "They are suitable for medical devices and can be used to prevent bed sores or to locate the pressure distribution inside the shoe, and they can measure the posture through clothing to support personal training as well as the input controls for games and fitness equipment." In a technology demonstration for diabetics (see photo), 40 capacitively-charged elastomer sensors were attached to the sole, heel, and ankle of a sock to measure the 3D compression distribution across the foot. The ASIC is used to collect measurements from sensors and send the data wirelessly to the phone or tablet to alert patients to changing posture or weight distribution. Fraunhofer ISC is a silicate institute located in Uzburg, Germany, focusing on energy, environment and health. The lab will showcase this technology at IDTechEx in the United States.
