Recently, Rolls-Royce received an order to supply an innovative hybrid propulsion power package for two new expedition cruise ships of the Norwegian ferry and mail carrier Hurtigruten.
Two new ships, called "Roald Amundsen" and "Fridtjof Nansen", are expected to be delivered in 2018 and 2019 respectively.
It is reported that each new ship will be equipped with Rolls-Royce equipment package, which combines battery power and four medium-speed Bergen 33:45 engines. Each engine will also be connected to a selective catalytic reduction system to enable the new ship to operate in accordance with IMO. Tier III nitrogen oxide emission limit requirements.
The second ship, "Fridtjof Nansen", is expected to rise from "peak supplement" to full power. The auxiliary power of the "Roald Amundsen" comes from a set of 1.36 MW power packs that will be used during peak loads to make the Bergen engine run longer and optimize the load.
If the technology is feasible, Rollo wants to install a larger battery on the "Fridtjof Nansen", and the installation space reserved on the ship can be installed with a battery pack with a power of 5MWh, which ensures electric propulsion for 3-4 hours. Later, the ship Hurtigruten also wanted to modify the same battery technology on the first ship "Roald Amundsen".
The new ship was designed by Rolls-Royce and built by Kleven Shipyard in Norway. The ship will also be equipped with the AZP 120-EL permanent magnet motor driven Azipull pod propulsion unit as the main propeller for the first time, with a power of 3.5 MW and 2 units. Large channel propeller. Rolls-Royce will also supply automation and remote control systems, including integrated bridge systems, as well as Aquarius 100 stabilizers, dynamic positioning systems, mooring winches and power inverter cable lifts, generator sets, switchboards and Power management systems, etc.
Skjeldam added, “The passenger ship requires a lot of energy when it operates. As of now, no technology can fully meet the needs of an all-electrically propelled Hurtigruten ship.â€
Mikael Makinen, President of Rolls-Royce Business, said, “These cruise ships are a dream project for us. We have incorporated the latest technological innovations into beautiful designs.†Hybrid propulsion technology and hull construction and efficient use of ships Electricity will enable the new ship to reduce fuel consumption by about 20% and reduce carbon dioxide emissions by 20%, equivalent to reducing emissions by more than 3,000 tons of carbon dioxide per year.
